New ICY Sign Installation

New ICY Sign Installation

Newer technology helps improve safety

We've all heard the mantra - SLOW DOWN when driving in winter weather.  Sadly that message can be quickly forgotten when in a hurry or when the weather doesn't really feel like winter.

Jackson County Roads recently finished the installation of a new safety warning system on Foothill Road between Coker Butte Road and Vilas Road which will hopefully help to minimize traffic crashes during icy road conditions.  The new installation includes ICY signs which will flash when the road and weather conditions hit certain criteria.  Temperature and dew point data are analyzed constantly and when conditions meet a defined threshold the ICY signs will begin flashing.

We have used other 'flashing signs' that use LED and solar technology for places where stop signs are ignored and the reports are that the flashing signs really get a drivers attention.

This location along Foothill Road is shaded in the winter and therefore the road conditions at this area can be quite different than just a short distance away.  Speed is almost always an issue with winter driving crashes, therefore when motorists see the new signs flashing they should slow down to negotiate this stretch of rural roadway.

See the attached press release for more information.
