WHITE CITY – The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division is preparing for the annual series of “dry dock” boat inspections. Two weekends every year, local boaters can have their vessels and equipment checked prior to the beginning of the boating season. This year, the inspections will be held on March 5 & 6 and on March 12 & 13 from 9 am to 4 pm at 620 Antelope Road, White City.
JCSO marine deputies inspect approximately 300 to 500 boats each year. The annual dry dock inspections have been provided free of charge for more than ten years. They are held the two weekends following the annual Sportsmen’s and Outdoor Recreation Show.
Boaters need to bring their boats and all required equipment and paperwork, including a Boater Education Card. US Coast Guard representatives will be also be on site to perform safety checks of their own. Boats passing inspection will receive a 2016 safety decal.
Boaters should verify the safety equipment requirements of their specific type of vessel prior to inspection. Not all of the items listed below are required for all types of watercraft.
Items to be inspected:
Boater Education Card
Registration and identifying numbers
Aquatic Invasive Species permit
Personal flotation devices
Throwable flotation devices
Operable sound producing device (horn, whistle)
Charged fire extinguisher of the appropriate type
Working ventilation system
Backfire flame arrestor
Any other items required by the Oregon State Marine Board or the US Coast Guard
