C.O.P.S. Grant approved

We are happy to report on Wednesday of this week the Board of Commissioners approved the Sheriff’s Office to accept a C.O.P.S (Community Oriented Policing Service) Grant we were awarded by the U.S. Department of Justice in October of this year.  The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office was one of three agencies in the State of Oregon to be awarded this grant.  We are very proud of this accomplishment as it speaks volumes to the changes the Sheriff’s Office has made over the past two years.

The Grant will pay $250,000 toward the cost of two new criminal deputies over the next three years.  After the grant expires our plan is to retain the deputies indefinitely and absorb the cost through our existing budget plans.  The deputies hired under the grant will focus on problem oriented policing, building relationships between the community and the Sheriff’s office, and working with the schools in Jackson County.

We are excited about this opportunity as it will allow us to better focus on issues which affect livability in the community and at the same it will help free up our deputies assigned to patrol to respond to emergent calls for service and conduct pro-active patrols.  We hope to have these new positions filled soon and so we can begin the lengthy training program all new deputies or officers must go through.  We will continue to update you with our progress.

Take Care,

Sheriff Corey Falls
