Deputies arrested one man after a single-vehicle crash in rural Central Point early Sunday morning. Dispatch began receiving 911 calls at 3:09 am reporting a rollover crash in the 1800-block of Old Stage Road. Witnesses reported the vehicle was carrying teens and young adults who had just left a post-prom party attended by South Medford High School students.
Deputies say the vehicle, a red 2003 Ford Crown Victoria, left the roadway and crashed into bushes and a pole before overturning. A 15-year-old male passenger was ejected and trapped under the overturned vehicle. He was transported to Rogue Regional Medical Center. A 16-year-old male passenger fled the scene on foot and later arrived at RRMC for evaluation of injuries received in the crash. A total of five occupants, including the driver, were contacted by deputies. At least two of them were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Investigators believe there may have been a sixth occupant – a female – who left the scene to avoid contact.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as James Jerald Peters, 19, of Medford. Peters showed signs of impairment by marijuana. Deputies arrested him at the scene. Witnesses reported that Peters was driving at high speeds and passing vehicles in a no passing zone just prior to the crash. At the completion of the DUII investigation, Peters was cited and released for DUII, reckless driving, and recklessly endangering another person. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Dep. Grissom at 541-774-6800. Refer to case 17-9625.
