Man arrested after highway work zone crash (Photo)

SHADY COVE - A Trail man was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on several charges after an incident in a highway work zone. On Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at 3:32 p.m., dispatch received a report of a motor vehicle crash on Highway 62 near Old Ferry Road in Shady Cove. The highway is currently the site of an ODOT enhancement project; flaggers direct traffic in one lane while construction crews work in the other.

Deputies learned that a white 1998 Ford F-150 pickup driven by Richard Stephan Mori, 64, of the 9000-block of Elk Creek Road, rear-ended a logging truck and a passenger vehicle that were stopped in traffic due to the work zone. Witnesses reported that Mori got out of his vehicle and became confrontational, physically pushing and threatening to shoot one of the other drivers. No weapon was seen. Mori then got back in his vehicle and drove away, nearly striking a flagger in the highway work zone. A deputy located Mori driving on Rogue River Drive at Orchard Lane and made a traffic stop.

Deputies arrested Mori for driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving, endangering a highway worker, and harassment. A charge of failure to perform the duties of a driver ("hit and run") was not appropriate in this case because there was no visible damage to the involved vehicles. At the jail, deputies also issued citations for refusing a breath test, careless driving, and driving with an open container of alcohol. The case has been referred to the district attorney's office for prosecution.

Case 17-22494
