Deputies Begin Scam Prevention Campaign (Photo)

JACKSON COUNTY, Ore. -- Scammers will take money from anyone, but senior citizens are a frequent target. Now Jackson County Sheriff's Office deputies are also targeting seniors -- with "new" tactics to spread the word about scam prevention.

Reaching seniors can be a challenge with today's technology. Nothing gets news out quickly like social media. But, seniors are less likely than others to use the internet and social media.

To bridge the communication gap, deputies have begun distributing flyers and brochures with prevention messaging. They include information about scams currently circulating by phone and online, tips for how to recognize fraud, and what to do -- or not do -- if a scammer makes contact.

In one recent case, a man lost $1500 to a scammer posing as a police officer. The scammer told the man he had a warrant for his arrest for missing jury duty. The man paid the money, afraid he would go to jail if he did not comply. The victim hadn't seen recent reports about common scams and how to avoid them; he doesn't use the internet, watch local news, or read the newspaper.

Deputies have reached out to the local DHS-Senior Services office for additional help in getting the word out. Deputies provided brochures to be distributed by Food & Friends ("Meals on Wheels"), which delivers approximately 1,000 meals to seniors daily. Materials will also be provided to other social service agencies and posted in public places.

If your organization is interested in posting a flyer or brochures, please contact Sgt. Julie Denney at (541) 770-8927.
