Jackson County Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony

On Thursday, May 15, 2014, at 9:30 a.m. the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office will host the annual Jackson County Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony.  The ceremony will take place at August D. Singler Plaza, located between the Jackson County Courthouse and the Jackson County Jail.  Each year, the Jackson County Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony honors law enforcement officers from Jackson County, who have fallen while in the line of duty.

Members of the general public are invited to the Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony.  An invocation, color guard ceremony and bagpipe performance will be part of the event, as well as speeches from community leaders.

History
On October 1, 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726 designating May 15th of each year as a day to honor all of law enforcement and remember those who have died in service to their country. In 1994, President William Clinton amended the law to direct the flag on the US Capitol and all federal government buildings be flown at half-staff to remember fallen law enforcement officers.

In May of 1982, the first National Police Week ceremony in Washington, DC, was held on the lawn of our nation’s capital.
