DUII crash injures family of five, suspect
CENTRAL POINT – A two-vehicle crash in the 10300-block of Blackwell Road sent six people to the hospital. The crash occurred Sunday, April 9, at approximately 1:10 pm.
Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived on scene to find two heavily damaged vehicles and a significant field of debris from the crash. Medics from Jackson County Fire District #3 and Mercy Flights worked to assess the injuries. The Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) team responded to the scene to conduct the crash investigation.
Preliminary results indicate a maroon Nissan Altima traveling southbound on Blackwell Rd. crossed the center line and struck an oncoming white Dodge Caravan carrying a family of five, including three young children. All were transported to Rogue Regional Medical Center (RRMC) by ambulance with varying degrees of injuries.
The driver of the maroon car, John Viera Andrade, 23, of Gold Hill, is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. Rescue personnel had to extricate Andrade from his vehicle. He was flown to RRMC by Mercy Flights helicopter and remains hospitalized due to his injuries.
