CENTRAL POINT, Ore On 010920 multiple agencies conducted a Greenway Sweep to clean up along the Greenway from an area near Biddle Rd to the Square Dance Hall on Table Rock Rd. The area is approximately 25 acres in size.
The following agencies and businesses assisted with this project.
Medford PD, Central Point PD, Oregon State Police, Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon, Jackson County Animal Services, Jackson County Mental Health, Jackson County Parks Department, Jackson County Community Justice, Jackson County Roads Department, City of Medford Parks Department and ODOT.
Additionally, the project was supported with assistance from Knife River, Art of Plumbing, Central Equipment and the Rogue Valley Square Dance Center.
The sweep began about 0730 Thursday morning. It was preceded by weeks of in-person notices to persons camped on the Greenway. This included handing out information about support services available. Today’s sweep included help from the MPD Livability Team. Most of the camps had been vacated and a small number of individuals left on request today. One arrest for a warrant was made and there were no other incidents.
Removing this amount of refuse along the greenway can be challenging due to terrain and access. As such, the Jackson County Parks Department worked closely in the planning of the event to protect the riparian zone in the area to prevent damage to natural resources.
Crews initially ordered four 40-yard dumpsters to remove the large amount of trash. Crews had to take precautions due to the proliferation of used needles and a great deal of waste. It is estimated that a total of over 200 yards of garbage and waste will be removed over the two day operation. In addition to removing waste, the operation will improve access to the area for fire and emergency services.
The cleanup will continue Friday.
