Community Organizations Partner to Better Serve Seniors

MEDFORD, OREGON — April 3, 2020, The Rogue Valley Council of Governments (RVCOG) Senior and Disability Services has partnered with Jackson County and the Rogue Valley Transportation District (RVTD) and nonprofit organizations to ramp up their outreach services to our aging population and people with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal of this effort is to ensure the most vulnerable members of Jackson County can stay at home safely.

Jackson County Health and Human Services has assisted with the purchase of 4,800 additional meals for the Food & Friends / Meals on Wheels program. Senior and Disability Services is also partnering with RVTD, who will be providing staff and vehicles to ensure those meals are delivered to program participants. “We are able to efficiently utilize the skills of drivers who may not be working as much right now,” said Laura O’Bryon, Director of Senior and Disability Services at RVCOG, who also commended Jackson County Public Health leadership for their dedication to supporting the senior community.

In addition to meal delivery, the Food & Friends / Meals on Wheels program offers meal pickup opportunities for eligible seniors, though the process has changed to align with social distancing practices. “We’ve shifted from congregate meal sites to allowing eligible individuals to pick up a week’s worth of meals at a pickup station,” explained O’Bryon.
