FDA Approving Pfizer for age 12-15
Yesterday, the FDA extended emergency use authorization to the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for people ages 12-15. This approval will be reviewed by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). ACIP will make a recommendation to the CDC Director, who will issue guidance for administering the vaccine to this age group. The Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup (WSSSRW) will discuss the data and review process in order to issue a memo to Governors from participating states. ACIP and the WSSSRW meet on May 12. Until these next steps are completed, the Pfizer vaccine is not available for youth between the ages of 12-15.
In anticipation of recommendations for the administration of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to this age group, the Oregon Health Authority and Jackson County Public Health have been working with COVID-19 Providers to begin planning for the Pfizer vaccine to be readily available for eligible youth throughout the state. Jackson County Public Health will provide more information as it becomes available.
Benefits of Getting Vaccinated
The best way to fight this pandemic and get back to the things and people we love is for everyone to do their part and get vaccinated. Continue to follow all prevention guidelines. Such as avoiding indoor spaces that do not offer fresh air from the outdoors, put 6 feet of distance between yourself and people you do not live with, wear a mask when out in public, avoid crowded settings in where people are at risk of COVID-19, and wash your hands frequently.
- COVID-19 vaccination will help keep you from getting COVID-19
- Once you are fully vaccinated, you can start doing more:
- Visit inside a home or private setting without a mask with other fully vaccinated people
- Visit inside a home or private setting without a mask with one household of unvaccinated people of any age who are not at risk of severe illness
- Travel domestically and internationally without a pre or post travel test
- Travel domestically and internationally without quarantining after travel
- If you have been fully vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine and it’s been at least 14 days since your final dose, you are no longer required to quarantine if you have had close contact with someone with COVID-19.
- COVID-19 vaccination is a safer way to help build protection. COVID-19 can have serious, life-threatening, complications and there is no way to know how COVID-19 will affect you. And if you get sick, you could spread the disease to friends, family, and others around you.
- COVID-10 vaccinations are an important tool to help stop the pandemic
- None of the COVID-19 vaccines can make you sick with COVID-19
