Yesterday evening, the Oregon Health Authority was performing updates to the statewide electronic disease surveillance system where COVID-19 case reports are managed. The update required the system to shut down.  Jackson County Public Health was unable to process new cases during the shut-down. Therefore, the daily case numbers are lower than expected today, and tomorrow’s report will be higher than expected.

Jackson County’s 38th COVID-19 death is an 83-year-old male who tested positive on November 25 and died on December 1 at Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford, OR. Presence of underlying conditions is being confirmed.

If you Test Positive for COVID-19 or are a Close Contact with someone who has COVID-19

Due to the surge in cases and depending on when test results are reported to the local public health authority, cases and close contacts may not hear from local health departments in a timely fashion. If a case is reluctant to name their contacts during the interview process or refuse to answer calls from public health departments. In that case, contact tracers will not be able to notify close contacts of cases.

To help address some of these obstacles, Jackson County Public Health provides guidance on the COVID-19 page to assist people with what they need to do if they test positive or are a close contact.  That information can be located https://jacksoncountyor.org/hhs/COVID-19.

How to Prevent the Spread of COVID-19

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, everyone should take the following steps:

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a mask
  • Avoid close contact and keep 6 feet of distance between yourself and people who do not live in your household. The fewer people you are around, the better.
  • Wash your hands often
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces that are touched frequently with common EPA registered household disinfectants
  • Monitor your health, be alert for symptoms
  • Always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow, and do not spit

Care Facilities, Senior Living Communities, and Congregate Living Settings

The Oregon Health Authority publishes weekly data on cases and deaths in care facilities, senior living communities, and congregate living settings when there are three or more confirmed cases or one or more deaths.  Due to the spike in cases and outbreaks in these settings, Jackson County Public Health will provide daily information on outbreaks in care facilities, senior living communities, and congregate living settings during the surge of cases in Jackson County.

The numbers of cases includes staff, residents, and close contacts that have been determined to be COVID-19 positive cases and linked to the outbreak. Please note that these outbreaks are under investigation, and data may change daily.  Data is from 12:01 am on 12/3/20.
