All individuals and organizations, public and private, are potential targets for online extortionists.  You can take steps to protect yourself from ransomware.

Top 3 things you can do:

  1. Always keep a recent, offline backup copy of your data.
  2. Keep your computer up to date with the latest security patches.
  3. Be very cautious with links and attachments in unsolicited email.

If your computer is encrypted with ransomware:

  1. Turn it off immediately.
  2. If it is on a network with other computers, turn them all off to prevent it from spreading.
  3. Then call a computer professional for help.
