A Little Bit About Naloxone

Written by Dr. Jim Shames, Jackson County Medical Director

Every year scores of Jackson County residents die of opioid overdoses (pain pills and heroin).  There are many reasons for this, and many potential solutions to the problem.  One strategy to reverse this terrible trend is to supply the opioid antidote, naloxone, to as many people as possible.  The Medford Police Department, in collaboration with Jackson County Public Health now carries naloxone in all of its patrol cars, and as of this writing has had 7 “saves.”  If you feel you or a loved one are at risk of such an overdose, talk to your healthcare provider about naloxone.
