What You Should Know About Hepatitis C

Written by Dr. Jim Shames, Jackson County Medical Director

Almost 100,000 Oregonians are estimated to be carrying Hepatitis C, a chronic liver disease, and half don’t even know they have it.  In time, this disease can lead to cirrhosis and death.  The good news is that we have a cure for the majority of those carrying Hepatitis C.  If you received a blood transfusion before 1992, have ever injected drugs, had exposure to blood products, or were born between the years 1945-1965 (Baby Boomer), get tested.
