MEDFORD - Due to significant safety concerns caused by extensive damage along the south portion of the Bear Creek Greenway, Jackson County Sheriff’s officials are closing the trail to the public from US Cellular Community Park in Medford, to its southern terminus in Ashland effective immediately.
The Almeda Fire significantly damaged facilities along the greenway including multiple bridges. In addition to structural impacts, the fire has left hundreds of standing dead trees that pose significant hazards to trail users. Captain Tim Snaith from the Jackson County Sheriff Office noted, “The greenway is definitely not a safe place for people to be at this time and a closure is required to help ensure public safety. Please do not use this section of the Greenway.”
Jackson County has begun damage assessments and the trail will reopen in the future when hazards are mitigated.
