SAR Advises Hikers to Avoid Border Area (Photo)

ASHLAND, Ore. – While the Klamathon Fire has not reached Oregon, Jackson County Search and Rescue officials are preemptively urging hikers and other outdoors enthusiasts to avoid forested areas near the Oregon-California border.

The areas of concern include the Pacific Crest Trail, Mount Ashland, and the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument.  Officials are concerned that people in remote areas may have difficulty receiving notices and evacuating quickly in the event it becomes necessary.  Prevention is key; search and rescue crews may be prohibited from engaging in search missions due to fire danger.

Detour routes have not been established.  The U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management will coordinate further advisories and closures.
