Tips for a Safe Holiday Weekend
Memorial Day weekend typically marks the start of the summer vacation season. That means an increase in the number of vehicles on the nation’s roadways. Summer is also when we see more people out and about using alcohol and drugs.
With that in mind, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting DUII (Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants) saturation patrols over the Memorial Day weekend from May 27-30, 2016. Emphasis will be on rural roadways within Jackson County, especially roads leading to campgrounds and lakes. Impaired driving has fatal consequences. If you believe you see an impaired driver on the road, call 911. You could save a life.
To help avoid fatalities on our roadways, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has developed a list of tips that drivers can use for safe travel while driving:
- Buckle Up. Every Trip. Every Time. – Everybody must agree to wear their safety belts every time they are riding or driving in your vehicle. This includes making sure children are secured properly in child safety seats or booster seats. Proper seat belt use is also the best defense against a DUII-related crash.
- Don't Drive After Drinking – Impaired driving deaths spike during the holidays. Every 51 minutes, someone in the United States dies in an alcohol-impaired-driving crash. Be responsible – designate a sober driver before going out.
- Check Your Tire Air Pressure, Tread Wear, and Spare – NHTSA recently launched its TireWise campaign to provide consumers and retailers with essential information about choosing and caring for tires. Proper tire maintenance is especially important if traveling by 15-Passenger Van
- Keep Children Safe In and Around Your Vehicle – Make sure car seats and booster seats are properly installed and that any children riding with you are in the car seat or booster seat best suited to protect them. Another danger to children in and around cars is hyperthermia, or heat stroke. Never leave children unattended in your vehicle.
