Weekly Update
This week Captain Penland talks about just a few of his staff's accomplishments in 2016.
Here is a look back on what occurred in the Jackson County Jail in 2016. It was a very busy year for us.
In 2016 the Jackson County Jail lodged 14,131 people into the jail. This is 2100 more than in 2015 and is an increase of 17.4% over the 2015. Our Records Clerks entered a total of 40,628 individual charges for those lodgings.
Of the lodgings for the year, 10,401 (74%) were males and 3,730 (26%) were females. As of November of 2016, 83% of the people being lodged had at least one prior incarceration in the Jackson County Jail. Some had many, many more than one. Unfortunately we also had to force release 4,905 of those lodgings due to being at our population cap.
All of our corrections deputies are sworn deputy sheriffs. This gives them the same authority as the deputies that are out working the streets. As deputy sheriffs they are allowed to make arrests and investigate crimes. Our corrections deputies investigate crimes that occur in the jail. We still rely on our patrol and detective divisions to assist with or investigate major crimes that may occur in the jail.
In 2016 the Corrections deputies conducted the following criminal investigations in addition to the day to day assignments:
-
443 warrants served
-
63 assaults (this is includes everything from very minor assaults to those with serious injuries)
-
19 Drug related investigations
-
8 Criminal Mischief reports (for damaging jail property)
-
4 Suicide attempts
-
2 Restraining Order Violations (making contact with the victim through the mail)
-
1 Counterfeit money case
The jail is a very busy place. The employees in the Records division and the Corrections Deputies do a great job of maintaining jail operations in professional and organized manner. They, along with all of our employees, take great pride in their duties as well as keeping the public safe.
Sincerely,
Captain Dan Penland
