Woman Indicted for Financial Elder Abuse

CENTRAL POINT – A grand jury indicted a Central Point woman on 21 charges related to the financial abuse of a 69-year-old man in her care. Christina Marie Christopher, 44, of the 6300-block of Ponderosa Street, turned herself in to the Jackson County Jail on Monday, September 5. Christopher was booked on the following charges: criminal mistreatment in the first degree (11 counts); aggravated theft in the first degree (two counts); theft in the first degree (two counts); and, theft in the second degree (six counts). Christopher posted bail and is prohibited from contacting the victim pending trial.

The year-long investigation began with a referral from Adult Protective Services on September 1, 2015. Concerns were raised that Christopher was using the victim’s financial resources for personal gain. The victim requires care due to dementia. Christopher is a family member who had assumed the victim’s care and power of attorney.

Detectives examined numerous records and spoke with several witnesses. They learned that Christopher spent more than $131,000 from the victim’s accounts over a period of approximately two and a half years. Christopher also took out more than $105,000 in credit in the victim’s name. Christopher used the money/credit to acquire real estate and to purchase goods and services for her own use.
